When you begin receiving Medicare benefits, you will be eligible for some preventive services to keep you healthy. In particular, Medicare wants you to check in with your healthcare provider on an annual basis. While Medicare does not cover routine physical exams as we typically understand them, they have ensured that you and your doctor can monitor your health through preventive “Wellness” visits. You may be confused by some of the new terminology that Medicare uses to describe these benefits. Your agents at the Wooten Agency can help you navigate these services and ensure that your doctor accepts Medicare and can provide these important benefits.
“Welcome to Medicare” preventive visits
During your first year of Medicare coverage you may make an appointment with your doctor for a “Welcome to Medicare” preventive visit. During this free appointment, your healthcare provider will review your social and medical history. Additionally, your visit will typically include:
- Height, weight and blood pressure measurements
- Simple vision exam
- Depression and mental health assessment
- Creation of a written plan for future screenings, vaccinations and preventive services
Annual “Wellness” visits
After your first year of Medicare coverage you can meet with your physician annually to create a plan that assists you in preventing disease and maintaining your health. You will be asked to answer a “Health Risk Assessment” questionnaire that will assist your doctor in creating the most comprehensive plan for managing your health.
Your doctor will also:
- Review your family and medical history
- Update your list of medications and other healthcare providers
- Measure your height, weight and blood pressure
- Provide a cognitive impairment assessment
- Create a checklist of treatment options to consider
Importance of “Wellness” visits
Remember, “Wellness” visits are free, and while they are not considered routine physical exams that often include blood panels, they do provide many of the same benefits, and are essential to evaluating your risk for disease and other health issues that can be easily managed with early detection.
